Gaziantep is one of the most industrialized and modern cities in southeastern Turkey. It is a big producer of cotton yarn and is widely known for its pistachio nuts. The city is famous for its culinary as well, especially kebabs and varying types of baklava. Although the city has a thousand years of history, today not much can be seen from the past. The old section of town does have some Hittite examples worth seeing, as well as finds from the recently excavated nearby Roman garrison city of Zeugma. Southwest of Gaziantep lies Yesemek, one of the oldest quarries in Anatolia. This area was used as a sculpture workshop from the 13th century B.C. to the 8th century B.C. There are over 300 statues and stelae scattered about. They lie on the hillside just as the ancient sculptors left them. |
